Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate personal care: assist with baths, grooming, dressing, and toileting so patients feel comfortable and respected
- Support activities of daily living (ADLs) including feeding, mobility assistance, and range-of-motion exercises
- Monitor and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) and report any abnormalities promptly
- Collect stool, urine, and sputum specimens accurately for clinical analysis
- Document patient care and observations on hospital-approved flow sheets with clarity and timeliness
- Safely position, lift, and transfer patients using proper equipment and techniques
- Prepare and pass meals according to diet charts and assist patients with feeding as needed
- Apply oxygen via nasal cannula, simple mask, or nebulizer mask under licensed staff direction
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked environment for patients and staff
- Engage patients in planned recreational and therapeutic activities to support their wellbeing
- Communicate courteously with patients and families and contribute to the patient care plan
Qualifications
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or state equivalent (preferred/required depending on state rules)
- Completion of an approved CNA training program and demonstrated competency in personal care
- CPR/BLS certification preferred or willing to obtain
- Comfortable with specimen collection, vital signs, documentation, and oxygen administration
- Ability to work rotating and evening shifts, including weekends
- Ability to safely lift/transfer patients and use patient-moving equipment
- Valid driver's license if assignment includes home care or patient transport duties
Education
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent)
- Successful completion of an approved CNA program
Knowledge & Skills
- Patient care and activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Measuring and recording vital signs accurately
- Specimen collection (stool, urine, sputum) and handling
- Accurate documentation and use of hospital flow sheets
- Infection control practices and adherence to safety policies
- Patient transfer and use of lifting/transfer equipment
- Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, simple masks, and nebulizers
- Ability to assist in recreational/therapeutic activities and communicate with families
- Familiarity with long-term care, medical/surgical, and SNF/ICF environments
- Motor vehicle operation for select assignments (when required)
