Roles & Responsibilities
- Gross complex surgical pathology specimens (colon cancers, breast cancers, Whipple procedures and other higher complexity cases) with precision and care
- Accession, label, and document specimens in the LIS (CoPath, Cerner, Polytech, Avalon, Orchard, Apollo, Prolis, BioTracer or similar) accurately
- Collaborate closely with pathologists and supervisors to ensure diagnostic quality and appropriate sampling
- Maintain meticulous records, chain of custody, and specimen handling to support patient safety and quality assurance
- Follow all lab safety, QA, and standard operating procedures to keep the work environment compliant and efficient
- Train and support laboratory assistants and participate in department orientation and ongoing learning
Qualifications
- ASCP registered Pathologists' Assistant (required)
- Proven experience grossing complex surgical pathology specimens (focus on higher complexity cases preferred)
- Familiarity with LIS systems and electronic pathology workflows (CoPath and Cerner experience a plus)
- No MLT or MT certification required for this role
- No patient contact required, BLS not necessary for this position
- Professional presentation (scrubs in professional colors) and strong communication skills
Education
- Certificate or Bachelor's degree in Pathologists' Assistant program or related laboratory science
- ASCP registration as a Pathologists' Assistant (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in surgical pathology grossing techniques and specimen triage
- Working knowledge of LIS/CoPath/Cerner and specimen accessioning workflows
- Strong attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity
- Ability to work collaboratively in a lab team and follow chain-of-custody procedures
- Comfort handling higher complexity specimens and following precise protocols
