Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform accurate phlebotomy (venipuncture and arterial puncture) across the patient population while ensuring patient comfort and safety
• Use Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information System (LIS) to register patients, release orders, enter results and accession specimens
• Identify patients using two identifiers and label specimens correctly to preserve chain of custody and specimen integrity
• Collect a variety of specimen types (blood cultures, swabs, urine, heel/finger sticks, blood bank specimens) and follow order-of-draw and special collection instructions
• Process specimens: centrifuge, aliquot, run daily reports, generate lists/labels, and prepare samples for courier or reference lab transport
• Perform waived testing and, when authorized, rapid flu, strep, mono and pregnancy testing, including quality control and proficiency testing procedures
• Drive to client/patient sites as needed to perform collections and return specimens properly to the lab
• Communicate stat/critical results to authorized personnel and document actions taken

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of phlebotomy experience (explicitly required)
• Proficiency with Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Experience performing arterial punctures and multiple specimen collection types
• Comfort with night shift work and every-other-weekend/holiday coverage
• Ability to perform specimen processing tasks (centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling) and follow aseptic technique
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel to client/patient sites for collections

Knowledge & Skills

• Phlebotomy: venipuncture, arterial puncture, order of draw and patient identification
• Specimen handling: labeling, transport, accessioning, centrifugation and sample processing
• HIS & LIS operation for registration, order entry, accessioning and result entry
• Waived testing, rapid diagnostic tests and quality control/proficiency testing
• Patient-facing skills: clear communication, patient instruction and assessing patient response
• Basic EKG tracing (site-dependent), inventory management and supply ordering
