Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform and interpret clinical laboratory tests on blood, body fluids and tissue to support timely patient care
• Conduct antibody identification and transfusion compatibility testing in the blood bank
• Operate and maintain instruments such as the Ortho Vitros 5600 according to protocol
• Manage emergency blood banking procedures and respond quickly to STAT/ER needs
• Document results accurately in Epic and maintain meticulous QC and compliance records
• Collaborate with nursing and clinical teams to ensure safe, efficient specimen handling and reporting
• Follow CLIA and CAP standards to support laboratory accreditation and patient safety
• Troubleshoot instrumentation and testing issues and escalate when necessary

Qualifications

• ASCP, AMT, or equivalent MLS/MLT certification required upon submission
• Experience with Epic LIS strongly preferred
• Hands-on antibody identification experience is required
• Proven experience in emergency blood banking and transfusion medicine
• Familiarity with Ortho Vitros 5600 or similar chemistry/immunoassay platforms
• Comfort working night shifts and rotating weekend schedules
• Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication skills

Education

• MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) certification (ASCP/AMT or equivalent) required
• Associate degree (typical for MLT) or Bachelor’s degree (typical for MLS) as applicable

Knowledge & Skills

• Clinical laboratory testing and specimen processing
• Blood bank procedures, antibody IDs, and transfusion compatibility
• Operation and basic maintenance of Ortho Vitros 5600
• Electronic medical record/LIS documentation using Epic
• Quality control, instrument calibration, and CAP/CLIA compliance
• Ability to prioritize STAT and inpatient/ER testing needs
• Team collaboration and clear communication with clinical staff
