Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide full-scope cardiopulmonary services for patients across the lifespan, delivering compassionate care with respect for patient rights and dignity
- Perform airway management, assist with intubations, and manage ventilators for adult, pediatric and infant patients
- Obtain and analyze arterial blood gases (ABGs) and operate ISTAT ABG analyzers when needed
- Administer chest physiotherapy and perform patient suctioning techniques safely and effectively
- Conduct pulmonary function testing (PFTs) and assist with treadmill/stress testing and EKG monitoring
- Accurately document therapies, write reports, and assist with procedural documentation and quality improvement
- Educate patients and families on respiratory treatments, indications and techniques, and determine when interpreter support is needed
- Maintain and troubleshoot respiratory equipment, including ventilators, nebulizers, oxygen concentrators and monitoring devices
Qualifications
- Graduate of an AMA-accredited Respiratory Therapy program, AS Degree preferred
- NBRC credential required (CRTT, CRT, RT or RRT)
- Minimum of 1 year clinical respiratory therapy experience in a hospital setting
- BLS certification required; ACLS and PALS encouraged or preferred
- Ability to read and interpret physician orders, equipment manuals and hospital policies
- Strong documentation skills and ability to produce clear reports
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness of interpreter/language support needs
Education
- Graduate of an AMA-accredited Respiratory Therapy program (AS Degree preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Airway management and intubation assist
- Ventilator operation and management for adult, pediatric and infant patients
- ABG procurement and analysis, including ISTAT use
- Chest physiotherapy and patient suctioning techniques
- Pulmonary function testing (PFT) and treadmill/stress testing support
- CPR and basic life support procedures
- EKG, Holter/event monitor familiarity and cardiac rhythm recognition
- Documentation, report writing and procedural revisions
- Familiarity with respiratory therapy medications, delivery methods, indications and contraindications
