Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist with safe patient transport and precise positioning for surgical procedures
• Assemble and dismantle surgical tables and instrument setups before and after cases
• Prepare the patient and operating room, open sterile supplies, and set up instrumentation
• Perform skin preparation and draping to support sterile technique
• Assist the surgeon with gowning and gloving and by passing instruments and sutures
• Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sutures, and sponges throughout cases
• Identify, collect, and care for surgical specimens with attention to chain-of-custody
• Decontaminate instruments at point of use and follow established cleaning procedures
• Support efficient OR turnover and restock supplies to keep the schedule moving

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Certified Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA or NCCT) preferred
• Non-certified candidates considered with graduation from an ARC/STSA accredited OR tech program, documented on-the-job training, military OR training, LPN, dental assistant, ophthalmic technician, or medical assistant experience
• Minimum ~6 months of technical OR experience or specialized training (required for non-certified or on-the-job trained applicants)
• Must be able to provide documentation of training or military experience when applicable

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Graduate of OR technician program (ARC/STSA accredited) preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and strict adherence to infection control
• Operating room setup and efficient OR turnover
• Surgical instrument handling, decontamination, and maintenance
• Patient positioning and safe transport in the perioperative setting
• Gowning and gloving, and assisting surgeons during procedures
• Counting instruments, sutures and sponges accurately
• Specimen handling and labeling best practices
• Strong teamwork, communication, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
