Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive echocardiography studies (Transthoracic 2-D, M-Mode, Color-flow Doppler) accurately and efficiently
- Conduct transesophageal, exercise stress and pharmacological echocardiography as ordered
- Perform other cardiac diagnostic studies including EKG, Holter prep/monitoring/analysis, and cardiac stress tests
- Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment such as echocardiographs, Holter monitors, electrocardiographs and stress systems
- Use hospital information systems for scheduling, processing and correct documentation of studies
- Implement infection control practices and apply aseptic techniques for equipment disinfection
- Provide age-specific care across the lifespan, with a focus on neonatal and pediatric patients
- Serve as a resource to physicians, nursing staff and colleagues, and provide preceptorship and clinical guidance to students
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of cardiac sonography practice
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer credential required
- Successful completion of an echocardiography certification program and/or 2 years hands-on echocardiography experience
- Preferred: cardiovascular sonography certificate or certificate program completion
- Preferred: extensive hospital-based echocardiography experience, especially in pediatric and neonatal studies
- Comfortable providing preceptorship and clinical instruction to students
Education
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Certificate Program in Cardiovascular Sonography (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography techniques (2-D, M-Mode, color-flow Doppler)
- Stress echocardiography and pharmacological echo protocols
- EKG acquisition and interpretation fundamentals
- Holter monitor setup, monitoring and analysis
- Operation and troubleshooting of echocardiograph and cardiac diagnostic equipment
- Infection control procedures and aseptic technique for equipment
- Age-specific patient care, including neonatal and pediatric cardiac protocols
- Experience with hospital information systems for scheduling and documentation
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with physicians, nursing staff and students
