Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and collection procedures including vacutainer and syringe methods with accuracy and care
- Conduct finger sticks and heel sticks, with special attention to neonates and infants when needed
- Use handheld collection devices and follow proper specimen labeling and transport protocols
- Provide excellent patient care before, during, and after collection — explain procedures and ensure post‑venipuncture site care
- Document collections and results accurately in electronic health record systems (Epic preferred; Beaker familiarity a plus)
- Maintain infection control practices, specimen integrity, and safety standards at all times
- Float to sister facilities as needed, adapting professionally to different unit workflows and teams
Qualifications
- CPT I (Phlebotomy) certification active in the state of CA (required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
- Minimum 2 years of phlebotomy experience (travel experience required — please screen if no travel experience)
- Pediatric and neonatal phlebotomy experience preferred
- Active CA license required — pending licenses are not accepted
- Willingness to float to sister facilities and work within an acute care hospital environment
- Ability to provide RTO information at time of submission as requested by the facility
Education
- High school diploma or GED (required)
- Phlebotomy certification (CPT I) — required
- BLS certification — required
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in venipuncture techniques: vacutainer, syringe, finger stick, heel stick
- Comfortable working with neonates, infants, pediatrics and adult populations
- Familiarity with handheld collection devices and specimen handling best practices
- Experience with Epic charting (preferred) and Beaker lab systems
- Strong patient communication, bedside manner, and attention to detail
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced acute care setting
