Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess patients' nutritional status using comprehensive nutrition assessments and the Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam (NFPE)
- Develop individualized plans of treatment addressing cancer, cachexia, malnutrition and comorbidities
- Manage enteral nutrition and support patients receiving tube feedings and TPN when appropriate
- Interpret body composition results using the InBody 520 and incorporate findings into care plans
- Collaborate closely with speech pathology, physical therapy, social services and other providers to deliver coordinated care
- Educate patients and families on dietary guidelines, nutrient deficiencies and medical nutrition therapy
- Monitor and manage nutrition therapy complications, including refeeding syndrome and protein-calorie malnutrition
- Document thoroughly in the patient chart (Epic preferred) and advocate for patient-centered care
Qualifications
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential — required
- Active Illinois state dietitian license — required
- Minimum 2 years of clinical experience; 3-4 years preferred
- Experience in adult outpatient/clinic settings and with enteral nutrition (tube feedings)
- Proven skills in NFPE, nutrition assessments/reassessments and developing plans of treatment
- Comfortable working with oncology, metabolic, GI and complex comorbid patients
- Experience with Epic or other electronic health record systems preferred
- COVID-19 vaccination required per facility guideline (medical/religious exemptions allowed)
Education
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential — required
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field (or equivalent accredited education) preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) and comprehensive nutrition assessments
- Enteral nutrition management and familiarity with TPN considerations
- Cancer-related nutrition care, cachexia management and symptom-driven nutrition therapy
- Therapeutic diet orders, dietary guidelines and treatment planning
- Recognition and management of protein-calorie malnutrition and refeeding syndrome
- Body composition analysis (InBody 520) interpretation
- Strong interdisciplinary communication, patient advocacy and clinical documentation skills
- Familiarity with lab monitoring (blood glucose/A1C, lipid panels) and medication effects on nutrition
