Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead engaging therapeutic recreation groups tailored to mental health needs to promote coping skills and socialization
• Design and implement individualized treatment plans that support recovery goals and measurable outcomes
• Collaborate closely with occupational therapists, nursing, and mental health staff to deliver coordinated care
• Document participant progress, outcomes, and safety considerations in a timely and professional manner
• Facilitate meaningful leisure and life-skills activities that encourage positive behavior change
• Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment that respects dignity and boundaries within a correctional setting
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to program development and quality improvement

Qualifications

• State credential or certification in Recreational Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation (required or as state regulations dictate)
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred
• Experience working in mental health settings; prior experience with correctional or institutional populations is a strong plus
• Current CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
• Ability to pass required background checks, TB screening, and health clearances
• Strong communication skills, professionalism, and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, or related field preferred
• Or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience

Knowledge & Skills

• Skilled in group facilitation and activity adaptation for diverse cognitive and behavioral needs
• Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, assessment, treatment planning, and outcome measurement
• Behavioral management techniques and de-escalation strategies appropriate for mental health populations
• Comfortable with clinical documentation and electronic records
• Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize in a busy environment
• Cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed care approach
