Roles & Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens and other samples accurately and compassionately
• Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and chain of custody for all specimens
• Follow established infection control and safety protocols to protect patients and staff
• Maintain accurate documentation in patient records and laboratory logs
• Prepare and maintain phlebotomy supplies and equipment, ensuring cleanliness and calibration
• Communicate clearly with patients to explain procedures and reduce anxiety
• Collaborate with nursing and laboratory staff to prioritize urgent collections and resolve issues

Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized phlebotomy program or equivalent hands-on training
• Phlebotomy certification preferred; state-specific certification if required
• Previous clinical phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting preferred
• BLS/CPR certification preferred or willing to obtain during orientation
• Strong attention to detail, excellent patient communication skills, and reliable attendance

Education

• High school diploma or GED required
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Venipuncture and capillary collection techniques with a focus on patient comfort
• Specimen handling, labeling, and transport best practices
• Familiarity with infection control standards and PPE use
• Basic understanding of laboratory workflow and priorities
• Good documentation habits and comfortable using electronic health records
• Ability to work efficiently under periodic time pressure while maintaining accuracy
