Roles & Responsibilities
- Ensure the operating room environment is safe and that equipment functions properly for every procedure
- Scrub, gown and glove self, surgeon and assistants while maintaining the highest standards of sterile technique
- Prepare, pass and account for instruments and supplies during procedures; perform surgical counts with the circulator
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs by understanding procedures and staying one step ahead
- Assist with draping the sterile field and prepping the surgical suite for the next patient
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization and assist with terminal room cleaning
- Help train and mentor new employees and students in the scrub tech role
Qualifications
- NBSTSA certification (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- Trade or Technical School certificate or diploma in Surgical Technology
- At least 1 year of prior scrub tech or surgical technologist experience preferred, with proficiency in total joint, sports medicine, general orthopedics and ortho spine
- Comfort working in a call rotation and adapting to OR schedule needs
- Ability to follow strict sterile technique and OR policies; team player with strong communication skills
Education
- Trade/Technical School Certificate or Diploma in Surgical Technology
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in sterile technique and maintaining a sterile field
- Skilled at instrument handling and passing during live cases
- Experienced performing surgical counts in collaboration with the circulator
- Competent in scrubbing, gowning and gloving for the surgical team
- Able to set up and verify OR equipment and assist with draping
- Knowledgeable about cleaning and preparing instruments for sterilization
- Comfortable training new staff and students in the scrub tech role
- Familiarity with terminal room cleaning and prepping surgical suites
