Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor respiratory status, adjusting therapies to optimize patient breathing and comfort
- Manage ventilators and advanced airway equipment safely and effectively
- Deliver therapeutic respiratory treatments and administer inhaled medications per protocols
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary team members on care plans
- Perform arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation to guide clinical decisions
- Respond to respiratory emergencies and participate in rapid response/code situations
- Document patient care thoroughly in the electronic medical record and communicate handoffs clearly
- Coach patients and families on breathing techniques, equipment use, and discharge plans
Qualifications
- Current Respiratory Therapist credential (CRT or RRT) — show off that NBRC stamp
- Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner license (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- BLS required; ACLS and PALS preferred or obtainable
- Minimum clinical experience in acute care settings preferred (1+ year suggested)
- Comfort with ventilator management, high-flow oxygen, and advanced airway skills
- Current immunizations and ability to pass background and drug screening for travel assignments
- Strong teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills
Education
- Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field (Bachelor's preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Ventilator management and advanced respiratory modalities
- Arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling and interpretation
- Airway management, suctioning, and patient assessment
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and documentation best practices
- Infection control practices and safe PPE use
- Patient and family education with clear, compassionate communication
