Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor patients across the mother-baby continuum using skilled clinical judgment
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans that promote safe outcomes
- Provide clear, compassionate patient and family teaching to support recovery and transition home
- Document care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record to meet regulatory standards
- Delegate, coordinate, and supervise team members to ensure safe, efficient patient care
- Serve as charge nurse when scheduled — lead the unit through admissions, discharges, and staffing
- Use critical thinking and crisis management skills to respond to changing patient needs
- Maintain a professional, patient-centered approach that reflects the organization’s values
Qualifications
- Current Washington State RN licensure (required)
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- BLS (Healthcare Provider) — AHA or equivalent (required within 30 days of hire)
- NRP (AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required for Mother-Baby RNs (prior to end of orientation)
- ACLS required to be obtained within 6 months of hire (and renewed per policy)
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring or NCC EFM (required within specified training timeline)
- Minimum of 1 year RN experience preferred for specialty nursing departments; acute care experience preferred
- RN-C or other specialty certification preferred
Education
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
Knowledge & Skills
- Assessment and data collection across physiologic and psychosocial domains
- Care planning and implementation with strong documentation skills
- Patient teaching and family education tuned to readiness and learning needs
- Delegation, supervision, and charge nurse leadership
- Electronic fetal monitoring competency (AWHONN or NCC EFM)
- Critical thinking, crisis management, and safe decision-making
- Comfort with EMR documentation and unit-specific equipment
