Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor critically ill patients, making timely clinical decisions that directly impact outcomes
- Manage ventilated patients and perform ventilator adjustments in collaboration with the care team
- Titrate vasopressors, inotropes, sedatives and other drips safely and per protocol
- Perform focused patient assessments and execute evidence-based interventions for ICU acuity
- Document care accurately and efficiently in EPIC to ensure continuity and clear communication
- Collaborate with intensivists, eICU support and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate complex care
- Serve as a dependable team member on nights — support peers, cover charge responsibilities as needed
- Contribute to a learning environment: participate in orientation, skills checks and open-book exam expectations
Qualifications
- Active RN license eligible for submission in Nebraska (license to submit is required)
- Minimum 2 years of recent ICU/critical care nursing experience
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications and NIHSS credential required at time of submission
- Demonstrated competency in ventilator management and drip titration
- Valid driver's license required for radius verification
- Ability to pass unit orientation skills assessment (open-book exam; 90% required to continue)
- Willingness to float to PCU/MedSurg when needed and work every-other-weekend and holiday rotation
- Compliance with unit policies (example: no artificial nails in patient care areas)
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — active RN licensure required; BSN not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient with EPIC charting and documentation workflows
- Strong critical care assessment skills and rapid clinical judgment
- Experience with ventilator management and mechanical ventilation troubleshooting
- Skill in drip titration (vasopressors, sedatives, insulin, heparin, etc.)
- Familiarity with TTM, BIS scoring and occasional IABP support
- Comfort working with eICU support and integrating remote critical care guidance
- Excellent team communication, delegation and time management on high-acuity shifts
- Stroke assessment skills (NIHSS) and ACLS algorithm familiarity
