Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in assessing orthopedic patients and executing treatment plans
- Apply and remove casts, splints and immobilization devices with attention to proper molding and pressure-point relief
- Provide wound care and manage post-operative dressings using aseptic technique
- Prepare exam and procedure rooms, take and record vital signs, and document care in the medical record (Epic preferred)
- Support procedures such as reductions, aspirations and basic injections under provider direction
- Fit and instruct patients on braces, walkers, crutches and canes, and deliver clear patient education for at-home care
- Perform sterile dressing techniques and suture removal as directed, ensuring patient comfort and safety
- Maintain cast saw and related equipment, trim/univalve casts, perform wedging and windowing when indicated
Qualifications
- BLS certification (AHA or ARC) — required
- Minimum 1 year outpatient experience; preference for 2+ years with strong orthopedic specialty experience
- Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC) from NBCOT preferred — must obtain within 180 days if hired
- Flu vaccination required (no declination/exemptions accepted)
- Familiarity with outpatient clinic workflows and Epic charting preferred
- Comfort performing cast/splint application & removal, cast saw use, sterile dressing and suture removal
- First-time travel clinicians are welcome — travel experience not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Splinting and casting techniques (short/long arm, short/long leg, thumb spica, sugar tong, walkers, PTB, etc.)
- Wound care, sterile dressing techniques and suture removal
- Cast saw operation, trimming, univalving, wedging and windowing
- Brace fitting, crutch/cane fitting and gait training with clear patient instruction
- Ability to assist with basic orthopedic procedures (reductions, aspirations, prep/positioning)
- Proficient in taking and recording vital signs and accurate documentation in Epic
- Strong patient education and communication skills; detail-oriented and safety-focused
