Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform grossing, embedding, microtomy and routine histology workflows with accuracy and attention to detail
- Prepare and process frozen sections and assist with intraoperative consults in a timely manner
- Run and troubleshoot automated tissue processors, staining platforms and IHC assays to ensure diagnostic quality
- Prepare cytology specimens including ThinPrep, cell blocks and cytospin preparations
- Mount, stain (H&E and special stains) and coverslip slides, maintaining excellent slide quality for pathologist review
- Follow fixation, decalcification and specimen-specific protocols to preserve tissue integrity
- Document procedures and results in the charting system (Epic preferred) and maintain clear communication with pathology team
- Support quality control and safety procedures, identifying and reporting artifacts or specimen issues promptly
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of histology experience with hospital/hospital clinical laboratory experience (Grossing experience is a HARD STOP)
- California state license preferred; pending license accepted
- ASCP-HT certification preferred
- Experience with Epic or similar lab/charting systems preferred
- Comfort working night shifts (Saturday-Thursday) and adhering to RTO restrictions (no more than 7 days)
- Demonstrated competency in frozen sections, IHC and special stains
Education
- Associate's Degree in Science (preferred)
- ASCP-HT certification (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong grossing skills and specimen handling
- Tissue processing: automatic tissue processors, clearing and dehydration agents
- Embedding techniques for a range of specimen sizes (including GI and skin)
- Microtomy skills for paraffin, fatty and hard/frozen tissue
- Staining: H&E, special stains, IHC workflows and troubleshooting
- Cytology prep: ThinPrep, cell block, cytospin and gyn specimen processing
- Understanding of fixation chemistry, decalcification and artifacts
- Familiarity with Epic/charting systems and standard lab documentation practices
