Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide expert labor and delivery care in a high-risk, high-volume L&D unit, managing complex maternal conditions with calm and skill
- Serve as Baby Nurse during deliveries, performing newborn assessment, APGAR scoring, radiant warmer management, Vit K and eye care, and secure ID banding
- Circulate for C-sections and support the surgical team in the OR, maintaining sterile technique and patient safety throughout
- Continuously monitor fetal status using electronic fetal monitoring and interpret/act on abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
- Administer and manage critical medications (e.g., magnesium sulfate, insulin drips, heparin, oxytocin) according to protocols
- Provide postpartum care including hemorrhage management, breastfeeding support, wound care, and patient education
- Document thoroughly in Epic and participate in clinical review and interdisciplinary communication to ensure continuity of care
- Float to support Postpartum/Antepartum and sister sites as needed, maintaining flexibility while upholding unit standards and AWHONN guidance
Qualifications
- Active RN licensure eligible for practice in Washington (compact license honored at some facilities) and ability to complete NURSYS verification
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience in high-acuity, high-pace Labor & Delivery required; 5+ years high-risk L&D strongly preferred
- Current BLS and NRP required (proof of certifications required with submission)
- Prior travel nurse experience required — unit does not accept first-time travelers
- Must have current supervisory references and be able to pass clinical review
- Demonstrated ability to circulate for C-sections and provide full newborn delivery room care (hard-stop requirements)
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient with Epic charting and electronic fetal monitoring systems
- Skilled in neonatal resuscitation, newborn assessment, thermoregulation, and APGAR scoring
- Experience with high-risk maternal medications and drips (magnesium sulfate, insulin, heparin, oxytocin)
- Competent in IV therapy, starting and maintaining IVs, and phlebotomy
- Familiarity with C-section circulation, sterile technique, and OR workflows
- Ability to triage obstetrical patients, recognize abnormal fetal patterns, and implement appropriate interventions
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with excellent prioritization and communication skills
