Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality perioperative and postoperative nursing care for orthopedic surgery patients
- Assess patient status, monitor vital signs, and respond promptly to changes in condition
- Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately per provider orders
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthetists, therapists and the interdisciplinary team to optimize outcomes
- Educate patients and families on postoperative care, mobility, pain management, and discharge instructions
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient progress clearly and timely in the electronic chart
- Participate in unit quality improvement initiatives and support best-practice protocols
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse credential (RN) — active licensure required (North Carolina license or compact status recommended)
- Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience (orthopedic surgery or surgical floor experience preferred)
- BLS certification required; ACLS or other specialty certifications a plus depending on unit requirements
- Strong clinical assessment skills and comfort working in a fast-paced surgical environment
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
Knowledge & Skills
- Clinical knowledge of orthopedic surgical care, postoperative protocols, and mobility needs
- Wound care, pain management, and post-op complication recognition
- Proficient documentation in electronic health records and accurate charting practices
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and stay calm under pressure
- Patient- and family-centered approach with strong teaching skills
