Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-acuity cardiovascular intensive care for post-op and critically ill patients with skill and compassion
- Titrate vesicant medications, pressors, sedatives and paralytics safely and according to unit protocols
- Manage mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy care, optimizing respiratory support and weaning as appropriate
- Interpret telemetry and hemodynamic data, including PA catheter setup and trending, to guide clinical decisions
- Perform and assist with unit procedures such as cardioversion, central line care, chest tube management, thoracentesis and pericardiocentesis
- Document care accurately and efficiently in Cerner to ensure continuity and quality
- Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team — physicians, RTs, techs and other RNs — to deliver coordinated care
- Provide education and emotional support to patients and families during critical care episodes
Qualifications
- Active RN license (able to practice in North Carolina) — compact licensure accepted if applicable
- Minimum 2+ years of recent ICU/CVICU or critical care nursing experience
- Current BLS and ACLS (strongly recommended for CVICU practice)
- CCRN highly recommended and appreciated
- Proven competency with ventilator management, hemodynamics and titration of vasoactive/vesicant medications
- Comfortable with high-acuity procedures and sudden changes in patient condition
- Experience with Cerner documentation preferred
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — BSN preferred
- Completion of relevant critical care orientation or unit-specific training
Knowledge & Skills
- Cardiac ICU / CVICU critical care principles
- Titration of vesicant medications and pressor management
- Sedation and paralytic management
- Mechanical ventilator management and tracheostomy care
- Telemetry interpretation and advanced hemodynamics (PA catheter)
- Transvenous pacing, cardioversion, and familiarity with TEE
- Experience or familiarity with IABP, Impella and CRRT (desirable)
- Competent Cerner documentation and electronic charting
