Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-specific patient education on oral hygiene, prevention and nutrition — empower patients to care for their smiles
- Examine oral tissues and perform periodontal therapy to treat and prevent disease
- Perform coronal polishing and apply topical fluoride for preventive care
- Take and process dental radiographs as part of diagnostic and treatment planning
- Measure and chart periodontal pockets, record vitals (pulse, blood pressure, temperature) and maintain accurate patient records
- Manage patient schedules and coordinate clinic flow to maximize patient access
- Plan and lead dental prevention activities including sealant clinics, Head Start clinics and community health fairs
- Maintain hygienist supplies and ensure proper sterilization and infection control procedures
- Pitch in with other duties as assigned — teamwork keeps the clinic running smoothly
Qualifications
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
- Active Dental Hygiene License in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually
- High school diploma or GED
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- High school diploma or GED
Knowledge & Skills
- Proper infection control techniques and instrument sterilization best practices
- Solid understanding of dental and periodontal disease and evidence-based treatment therapies
- Proficiency with dental instruments and dental radiography
- Strong clinical hygiene skills and good manual dexterity
- Clear oral and written communication skills for patient education and charting
- Accurate clinical judgment and the ability to work independently
- Comfort sitting and working over patients for extended periods
