Roles & Responsibilities
- Audit medical records to validate accurate CPT and ICD-10 coding and ensure documentation supports coding decisions
- Compile clear, actionable audit reports with analysis of findings and trends
- Educate providers, coders, and charge entry staff on documentation and coding best practices to improve quality and compliance
- Communicate findings with physicians and midlevel providers verbally and in writing to validate observations and suggest improvements
- Maintain audit logs and tools to track audit activity and outcomes
- Support revenue cycle staff with coding guidance and hands-on assistance when needed
- Contribute to the development and implementation of documentation improvement and education plans with the Revenue Cycle Manager
- Train new revenue cycle team members on coding and documentation guidelines
Qualifications
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required
- Associate degree in a related field required; Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
- Minimum five years of inpatient and outpatient coding and auditing experience
- Proven experience coding professional claims in an office-based setting
- Experience interacting with physicians and providing education and feedback
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated auditing proficiency
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Education
- Associate Degree in a related field (required)
- Bachelor Degree in a related field (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Deep knowledge of CPT coding and ICD-10 coding guidelines
- Clinical documentation review and improvement
- Medical record auditing techniques and audit reporting
- Provider education and training methods
- Familiarity with coding professional claims and outpatient/inpatient coding workflows
- Understanding of revenue cycle processes and charge entry fundamentals
- Ability to collaborate with clinical staff and present findings clearly
