Roles & Responsibilities
- Administer competent respiratory care per physician orders, prioritizing patient safety and best practices
- Initiate, maintain and monitor mechanical ventilation; interpret flow/pressure curves to guide clinical changes
- Perform arterial blood gas draws and translate results into actionable care recommendations
- Provide effective airway management including bag/mask ventilation and assist with intubation
- Deliver medication administration and appropriate neonatal/pediatric/geriatric dosing when required
- Troubleshoot respiratory equipment and ventilators to ensure uninterrupted patient support
- Maintain accurate documentation of all respiratory procedures and patient status
- Participate in patient care rounds, in-services, and team communications to enhance continuity and outcomes
- Precept and orient new staff and students, helping to grow a skilled respiratory team
Qualifications
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential required; graduate of a COARC-approved Respiratory Care Program
- Minimum of 1 year of hospital respiratory experience
- BLS certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire)
- NRP certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire)
- Ability to legally work in the United States and pass background check, drug screen, and any required health screens
- Must meet minimum age requirement (16 years; 21 years for driving positions) and any facility-specific onboarding requirements
Education
- Graduate of a COARC-approved Respiratory Care Program
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Mechanical ventilation and ventilator management, including flow/pressure curve interpretation
- Patient assessment across the lifespan: neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric care
- Airway management, suctioning techniques, and intubation assistance
- Arterial blood gas collection and interpretation
- Familiarity with pulmonary and cardiac diagnostics (EKG, Holter, stress testing) preferred
- Proficient documentation, computer charge entry, and adherence to department policies
- Hemodynamic monitoring, medication administration, and respiratory equipment troubleshooting
- Strong communication skills for giving/receiving reports and patient/family education
