Roles & Responsibilities
- Prepare and document complete patient histories and develop individualized orthopedic plans of care in collaboration with the attending physician
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies (EMG, ECG, compartment pressure measurements, x-ray, CT, MRI, bone scan) to guide treatment
- Perform procedural interventions such as digital blocks, regional anesthesia, tendon repair, wound closure and debridement, incision and drainage, needle biopsy, percutaneous pinning, k-wire and hardware removal
- Provide diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including joint and bursa aspirations, fracture and dislocation reductions, injections, and brace/cast/splint applications
- Assist in surgery as first assist and support deep and superficial tissue closures and appliance application as delegated by the surgeon
- Conduct hospital rounds, write and manage orders, and collaborate with the orthopedic team to coordinate inpatient care
- Serve as primary orthopedic call for Bay Area Hospital patients in the ED and inpatient units, providing timely evaluation and treatment
- Dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals, and ensure clear electronic documentation and handoffs
Qualifications
- Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification/license (or ability to obtain Oregon licensure promptly)
- National NP certification in an appropriate specialty preferred (family, adult-gerontology, or orthopedics-focused NP credentials)
- Current BLS required; ACLS or other advanced certifications preferred
- Demonstrated experience with orthopedic assessment, procedural skills, and inpatient/ED orthopedics (prior PA/NP experience in orthopedics strongly preferred)
- Comfort managing emergent/stressful situations and working independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to participate in call coverage, including nights, weekends and holiday rotations
Education
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with NP certification; completion of an accredited NP program required
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency with electronic health records for documentation and order entry
- Strong orthopedic assessment and musculoskeletal exam skills
- Experience with diagnostic modalities: x-ray, CT, MRI, EMG and compartment pressure measurement
- Procedural competence: injections, joint/bursa aspiration, closed reductions, wound management and minor surgical procedures
- Surgical assist skills including first assist and postoperative management
- Excellent clinical judgment, clear communication, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration
- Ability to respond to coding/documentation queries and participate in quality & safety initiatives
