Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality medical-surgical nursing care to adult patients across medical, surgical and orthopedics populations
- Perform thorough patient assessments, develop nursing plans and monitor patient progress
- Administer medications safely, including heparin per unit protocol, and manage documentation
- Accurately document all care and assessments in EPIC to ensure continuity and compliance
- Collaborate proactively with respiratory therapy, physicians, charge nurses and interdisciplinary team members
- Support and mentor nursing assistants and techs to maintain safe patient ratios and smooth workflow
- Float to PCU or Burn when needed and adapt to changing unit needs with professionalism
- Complete unit competency checks and participate in orientation; demonstrate learned skills on a pass/fail assessment
Qualifications
- Active RN license in good standing (state licensure required)
- BLS certification required at start
- Driver's license required at submittal (used to verify 50-mile radius eligibility)
- Minimum 1 year of Med-Surg nursing experience preferred
- Comfortable with 12-hour night shifts and the physical demands of acute care
- Experience with EPIC charting and medication administration (including heparin) preferred
- Ability to pass unit orientation skills assessment (90% pass threshold) and comply with facility policies (e.g., artificial nails prohibited)
- Must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with CommonSpirit facilities including CHI or Dignity
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong patient assessment and clinical decision-making in med-surg and ortho patients
- Medication administration and safe titration practices (Heparin knowledge)
- EPIC documentation and electronic charting proficiency
- Telemetry monitoring familiarity and interpretation of basic cardiac rhythms
- Effective communication and teamwork with RT, charge nurses and interdisciplinary partners
- Ability to manage patient assignments with 1:5-1:6 ratios and coordinate care with support staff
- Adaptability to float to PCU or Burn units when required
