Roles & Responsibilities
- Prepare and organize sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment for operative procedures
- Function as the scrub person during surgeries, providing instruments and anticipating the surgical team’s needs
- Maintain and monitor the sterile field, taking corrective action to ensure patient safety
- Assemble supplies and assist with sterile draping and preparation of the operative field
- Perform instrument processing and decontamination and transport instruments to decontamination areas
- Assist the RN circulator with accounting procedures during cases
- Clean and prepare procedure rooms after cases and set up for subsequent patients
- Participate in ongoing education and competency verification to maintain high standards of care
- Support patient privacy, confidentiality, and the hospital’s mission, vision, and values
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred
- CRASE training required if travel assignment extends beyond six months
- Willingness to float to other departments where qualified
- Demonstrated ability to perform scrub duties, instrument handling, and sterile technique
Education
- Graduate from an accredited surgical technology program
Knowledge & Skills
- Preparing sterile instruments and maintaining a sterile field
- Scrub/sterile instrument preparation and sterile draping
- Instrument decontamination, processing, and transport
- Assisting the surgical team during procedures with anticipation and focus
- Post-procedure room cleaning and efficient turnover
- Competency verification and commitment to continuing education
- Basic life support and adherence to patient safety protocols
- Ability to perform accounting procedures in collaboration with the RN circulator
