Registered Nurse - Operating Room

Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Day shifts starting at 6:30 AM with 8-, 10- or 12-hour options (common examples: 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM, 6:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 6:30 AM - 6:30 PM). Typical schedule is 4x10s (Monday-Friday) with rotating coverage, every-other-weekend (EOW) expectations and on-call responsibilities. Weeknight on-call window is approximately 6:00 PM - 6:30 AM (~1x/week); weekend call roughly 3 times/month. May require occasional 5:30 AM start if surgeon begins at 6:30 AM. Shift type: Rotating (day with on-call night coverage).

Roles & Responsibilities
- Circulate for a broad range of cases including neuro, total joints, major vascular, general, GYN, urology and plastics — ensuring patient safety and smooth OR flow
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and OR techs to prepare rooms, equipment, and patient positioning for efficient case turnover
- Perform comprehensive pre-op assessments and ensure proper surgical time-out and documentation in Cerner
- Respond to call notifications and rapidly present to the OR within the required response window (30 minutes)
- Support pediatric cases confidently in the pediatric OR rooms and provide age-appropriate care
- Serve as a dependable team member during high-volume days (30-40 cases across rooms) and assist with intra-shift problem-solving
- Adhere to infection control, sterile technique policies and unit-specific protocols to maintain a safe surgical environment
- Participate in required orientation and competency validation for unit-specific equipment and workflows
Qualifications
- Current RN license (eligible to submit for CA license for assignment)
- Minimum 2 years RN experience required; 3 years of experience preferred for this posting
- Previous travel RN experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS (current)
- Proven experience with Cerner electronic medical record system
- Ability to circulate all listed case types including pediatrics (CVOR excluded) — this is a hard requirement
- Comfort working in a high-volume OR environment with multiple specialties and robotics exposure
- Flexible, dependable for call coverage and able to meet 30-minute on-call response time
Education
- Active RN license required (must be able to submit CA license)
- BSN not required (ADN or diploma acceptable); completed nursing program and required state credentials
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong perioperative nursing knowledge across neuro, vascular, joint arthroplasty, general and pediatric surgeries
- Proficiency with Cerner charting and perioperative documentation
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with surgeons, anesthesia and OR staff
- Ability to prioritize and manage rapid turnovers in a high-case-volume setting
- Familiarity with robotics cases and specialty instruments is a plus
- Competence in circulating role; scrubbing is handled by surgical techs but understanding scrub workflow is helpful
- Comfort working with pediatric patients and adapting care for pediatric OR cases
