Roles & Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating room and surgical instruments before each procedure to ensure smooth, safe operations
- Clean and inspect the surgery room before and after procedures to maintain sterile conditions
- Obtain, organize, and manage supplies and equipment required for each surgical case
- Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning and basic pre-op tasks under RN direction
- Assist the surgeon during procedures by passing instruments and anticipating needs
- Inspect and maintain instruments, ensuring they are sterile, functional, and ready for use
- Work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and collaborate closely with the perioperative team
- Document instrument counts and related perioperative tasks accurately
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Graduation from a nationally accredited Surgical Technologist educational program AND current certification as a Surgical Technologist (maintain credential through a nationally accredited credentialing organization)
- OR completion of an appropriate surgical technology training program in the U.S. military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or PHS Commissioned Corps)
- OR employment history as a Surgical Technologist for a cumulative period of one year within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015 (per posted options)
- Comfortable working under RN supervision in a fast-paced OR environment
- Strong attention to detail for instrument inspection and sterile technique
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program (preferred/required for certification)
- Military surgical technology training accepted as equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
- Surgical instrumentation: know your trays and tools inside and out
- Sterile technique and infection control best practices
- Operating room procedures and patient preparation workflows
- Instrument inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance
- Supply and equipment management to keep cases running on time
- Ability to assist the surgeon efficiently and anticipate procedural needs
- Team-focused communication and the ability to work under RN supervision
- Familiarity with military surgical technology training is a plus
