Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate maternal-newborn nursing care for mothers and infants throughout the postpartum and immediate newborn periods
• Perform and interpret fetal heart monitoring and escalate concerns using AWHONN best practices
• Deliver skilled postpartum care including assessments, teaching, and support for breastfeeding and recovery
• Conduct vaginal examinations and assist with clinical procedures as appropriate for maternal care
• Document care accurately and efficiently using EPIC charting to ensure clear communication across the care team
• Collaborate with physicians, midwives, lactation consultants, and interdisciplinary staff to optimize patient outcomes
• Respond promptly to emergencies, initiate appropriate interventions, and follow unit protocols for maternal or neonatal distress
• Participate in competency testing, skills checklists, and ongoing unit education to maintain high standards of care

Qualifications

• Current, valid RN license (per job checklist)
• Certifications required or strongly preferred: BLS, NRP, ACLS
• Fetal heart monitoring certification (AWHONN or equivalent) preferred
• Mother-and-baby experience with postpartum and vaginal examination skills a plus
• Experience charting in EPIC is required/preferred
• Successful completion of required competency exams and skills checklists

Education

• BSN degree preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong maternal-newborn nursing knowledge and clinical assessment skills
• Proficiency in electronic charting with EPIC
• Fetal heart monitoring interpretation and best-practice application
• Postpartum care, newborn assessment, and basic newborn procedures
• Effective communication and patient/family education skills
• Ability to think critically and act quickly in urgent maternal or neonatal situations
• Familiarity with infection control and hospital screening/vaccine requirements
