Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to cardiovascular surgery patients before, during, and after procedures
- Monitor hemodynamic status and respond quickly to changes in patient condition
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the perioperative team to deliver coordinated care
- Administer medications, manage drains/tubes, and perform wound assessments with attention to sterile technique
- Educate patients and families about procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge planning
- Document accurate, timely patient records and communicate changes in condition to the care team
Qualifications
- Active RN license in the state of Texas (compact license holders should verify eligibility)
- Minimum 1 year of recent clinical nursing experience (cardiac or surgical experience highly relevant)
- BLS required; ACLS and specialty cardiac surgery certifications preferred
- Current Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications or willingness to obtain
- Ability to pass hospital credentialing and background checks required for travel assignments
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or Diploma required; BSN preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, post-op cardiac care, and monitoring equipment
- Skillful in hemodynamic monitoring, telemetry interpretation, and ICU-level assessments
- Familiarity with sterile technique, surgical drains, chest tube management, and ventilator basics
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills in high-acuity perioperative settings
- Good clinical judgment, prioritization, and the ability to remain calm under pressure
