Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-appropriate preventive and therapeutic periodontal care for patients across the lifespan
- Deliver clear, practical patient education on oral hygiene, home care and nutrition
- Perform oral examinations, periodontal therapy, coronal polishing and topical fluoride applications
- Measure and chart periodontal pocket depths and record clinical findings
- Take and process dental radiographs and record vital signs as required
- Manage patient scheduling and help maintain an efficient clinic flow
- Coordinate and participate in community prevention activities like sealant clinics and health fairs
- Maintain hygienist supplies and ensure instrument sterilization and infection control standards are met
- Participate in competency assessments and complete required trainings on schedule
Qualifications
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene program (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- Active Dental Hygiene license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Successful completion of the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter
- High school diploma or GED
- Comfort with sitting over patients for extended periods and strong manual dexterity
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene program
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of infection control protocols and instrument sterilization
- Understanding of dental and periodontal disease processes and appropriate treatment therapies
- Proficient use of dental instruments and radiographic techniques
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for patient education and charting
- Accurate clinical judgment and ability to document findings clearly
- Comfort working in community outreach settings (sealant clinics, Head Start, health fairs)
