Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-acuity cardiac critical care for post-op open heart and complex vascular patients
- Monitor and interpret cardiac monitors and telemetry strips to quickly detect changes
- Titrate vasopressors, sedatives, analgesics, antiarrhythmics and other drips safely and independently
- Manage and troubleshoot advanced support: ECMO, CRRT, Impella, and IABP when indicated
- Collaborate with intensivists, hospitalists, perfusion, RT and the multidisciplinary team for excellent patient outcomes
- Perform ventilator troubleshooting and support respiratory needs alongside RT
- Document accurately in EPIC and communicate handoffs clearly to ensure continuity of care
- Float to other inpatient units as needed (excluding Maternity/NICU) and adapt to unit-specific workflows
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license for practice — compact licensure accepted if applicable
- BLS and ACLS required; NIHSS required
- Minimum 1 year of experience with this cardiac/CVICU patient population; 2 years of overall nursing experience preferred
- Hands-on experience with ECMO, CRRT, Impella, IABP, and titration of complex drips strongly preferred
- Comfort reading and interpreting cardiac monitors/strips independently
- Driver's license required at time of submittal (used to confirm radius rule eligibility)
- Ability to pass orientation skills exam (open-book) with a 90% score as a condition of continued assignment
- Adherence to facility policies such as no artificial nails in patient care areas
Education
- Active RN license required (BSN not required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong critical care assessment and hemodynamic monitoring skills
- Telemetry interpretation and cardiac rhythm recognition
- Proficiency with EPIC charting and electronic documentation
- Skill troubleshooting ventilators and working alongside respiratory therapy
- Familiarity with postoperative cardiac surgery care and structural heart/EP lab patients
- Effective communication, rapid clinical decision-making, and team collaboration
