Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-specific patient education on oral hygiene, home care and nutrition to prevent disease
- Perform examinations of oral tissues and deliver periodontal therapy to promote oral health
- Perform coronal polishing and apply topical fluoride to protect teeth
- Measure and chart periodontal pockets and take diagnostic dental radiographs (x-rays)
- Record patient vitals (pulse, blood pressure, temperature) and maintain accurate clinical records
- Manage patient schedule and ensure smooth clinic flow
- Coordinate and lead community prevention activities such as sealant clinics and Head Start events
- Maintain hygienist supplies and ensure proper sterilization and infection control of instruments
- Perform other assigned duties that support patient care and clinic operations
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- Active Dental Hygiene License in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Passage of the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists (required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must be obtained within 45 days of start and maintained)
- Clinical Competency Assessment (required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years)
- High Risk Competency (required within 3 months of hire and annually)
- High school diploma or GED (required)
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- High school diploma or GED (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of proper infection control techniques and sterilization procedures
- Understanding of principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies
- Skillful use of dental instruments and radiography techniques
- Excellent oral and written communication to educate patients and collaborate with the team
- Accurate clinical judgment and attention to detail
- Good manual dexterity and the physical ability to work at the chairside for extended periods
