Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver safe, patient-centered emergency nursing care across all ages
- Perform thorough nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans
- Administer medications and therapeutics accurately and document clearly
- Respond calmly and competently to emergency situations and implement life-saving measures
- Delegate and supervise CNA/Tech staff and provide constructive feedback
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care
- Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatments and discharge plans
- Complete accurate nursing documentation and participate in shift reports
- Support unit goals by participating in staff meetings, competencies and quality initiatives
- Contribute to a positive workplace by mentoring new staff, travelers and students
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Direct hire must apply for Alaska license before start; agency staff must have active Alaska license)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- ACLS and PALS to be obtained within 6 months of hire
- NRP and specialty certifications as applicable within required timelines
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior specialty experience preferred
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs and perform the physical demands of ED nursing
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current unrestricted RN license (Alaska or other U.S. state) — must apply for Alaska license if hired direct
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong assessment skills using the nursing process for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergent patient conditions quickly and effectively
- Medication knowledge including side effects and complications
- Competence with monitoring and emergency equipment like defibrillators and monitors
- Experience assisting with emergency procedures such as intubation support, arterial line setup and ABG collection
- Clear oral and written communication and accurate charting
- Leadership, delegation and team collaboration skills
- Patient education and counseling to support recovery and self-care
