Roles & Responsibilities
- Audit medical records to ensure accurate CPT coding and appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis assignment
- Compile clear, actionable audit reports with analysis and findings from record reviews
- Validate that clinical documentation supports billed services and suggest documentation improvements
- Communicate findings to providers and staff — verbally and in writing — to support better documentation
- Design and implement documentation support tools in collaboration with the Revenue Cycle Manager
- Develop and deliver formal and informal education for providers, coders and charge entry personnel
- Train new revenue cycle team members on coding and documentation guidelines and best practices
- Provide coding support as needed and participate in performance evaluation activities for revenue cycle staff
Qualifications
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) — required
- Associate Degree in a related field — required; Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred
- Five years of combined inpatient/outpatient coding and auditing experience
- Strong professional/physician coding experience in an office-based setting
- Experience interacting with physicians to provide feedback and education
- Proven ability to compile audit reports and meet productivity targets
Education
- Associate Degree in a related field (required)
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in CPT coding and ICD-10 coding
- Clinical documentation improvement and medical record auditing
- Physician/professional coding workflows and multi-specialty coding exposure
- Familiarity with revenue cycle processes and charge entry
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for provider education
- Ability to analyze records, maintain audit logs, and produce clear reports
