Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess and monitor post-anesthesia patients using focused physical exams and vital sign trends to ensure safe recovery
• Administer medications and perform medication reconciliation accurately and promptly
• Provide comprehensive Phase I and Phase II PACU care, including pain assessment and management
• Perform pre-op and post-op assessments and patient education to promote smooth recoveries and safe discharges
• Document patient encounters in the EHR (Epic preferred) with clarity and attention to detail
• Collaborate with anesthesia, surgical teams, and interdisciplinary staff to coordinate safe perioperative care
• Recognize and initiate emergency protocols, including malignant hyperthermia response when needed
• Support pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with age-appropriate care and comfort measures
• Float to Main PACU as needed and help maintain efficient patient flow across units

Qualifications

• Active CA Registered Nurse (RN) license required; pending CA license accepted
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience (perioperative/PACU experience preferred)
• Current BLS required; ACLS and PALS preferred
• Experience with Phase I PACU and Phase II recovery, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), and procedural/conscious sedation
• Comfortable with EHR charting (Epic preferred) and accurate documentation
• Ability to float to main PACU and work collaboratively in a fast-paced acute care setting
• First-time travel nurses welcome

Knowledge & Skills

• Perioperative nursing and PACU best practices
• Post-anesthesia patient assessment and vital signs monitoring
• Pain assessment and management, including use of opioid and non-opioid strategies
• Familiarity with general, local, MAC, and neuraxial anesthesia care and nerve blocks
• Medication administration, reconciliation, and reversal agent knowledge
• Obtain and interpret 12-lead EKG/ECG and basic lab values
• RASS scoring, malignant hyperthermia protocol, insulin and hypo/hyperglycemia protocols
• Isolation precautions/PPE and safe infection control practices
• Comfort with a range of surgical case types (ENT, general, gyn, ortho, ophthalmology, urology, vascular, plastics, podiatry)
