Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, direct patient care to individuals in a mental health setting
• Assist with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility support
• Take and record vital signs, monitor patients, and report changes to the care team
• Support therapeutic activities and encourage patient engagement with treatment plans
• Document care accurately and communicate clearly with nurses and multidisciplinary staff
• Maintain a safe, respectful environment for patients and staff in a correctional facility
• Participate in shift-to-shift handoffs and contribute to a collaborative team culture

Qualifications

• Active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required
• Medical Assistant (MA) certification considered a plus
• Experience or interest in mental health or behavioral health preferred
• Comfortable working in a correctional facility environment (Pelican Bay State Prison)
• Able to complete a 2-3 week orientation and follow facility policies and procedures
• Strong communication skills and a calm, patient-centered approach

Education

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Active CNA certification required; MA certification accepted

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of basic nursing procedures and safe patient handling
• Skill taking vital signs and observing changes in patient condition
• Ability to document care clearly and accurately
• Familiarity with mental health care approaches and de-escalation techniques
• Strong teamwork, interpersonal communication, and situational awareness
• Cultural sensitivity and respect for patient dignity in a secure environment
