Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and systematically gather patient data to develop safe, effective respiratory care plans
- Set up and manage mechanical ventilators, including BIPAP and CPAP, and monitor functionality
- Obtain and analyze arterial blood gases (ABGs) and use results to guide treatment recommendations
- Perform pulmonary function testing to ATS standards and ensure quality EKG recordings
- Administer respiratory therapy treatments, oxygen therapy, and cardiopulmonary medications safely
- Assist with flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy and implement VAP bundle protocols consistently
- Provide patient and family education tailored to learning needs and cultural considerations
- Document care, changes in condition, and any adverse events clearly and timely
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary team members and escalate deviations in care for review
Qualifications
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (R.R.T.) credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care or eligible
- Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of Massachusetts (or willing to obtain license)
- ACLS required (must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not current)
- NRP required (must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not current)
- PALS required (must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not current)
- Prior respiratory therapy experience required
- Basic computer skills and comfort with electronic documentation
- Ability to perform physical tasks (frequent reaching, occasional stooping, ability to move 10-50 lbs)
- Comfort working rotating weekends and holiday schedules
Education
- Graduate of a CoARC-accredited Respiratory Therapy program
- Credentialed as R.R.T. by NBRC or eligible
Knowledge & Skills
- Mechanical ventilation management and ventilator setup
- BIPAP and CPAP operation and assessment
- Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis and pulse oximetry
- Pulmonary function testing to ATS standards
- EKG performance and interpretation for quality recordings
- Respiratory therapy treatments, oxygen therapy, and medication administration
- VAP bundle implementation and infection prevention practices
- Assisting with flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy
- Patient assessment, care planning, and patient/family education
- Clear documentation and effective interdisciplinary communication
