Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-acuity nursing care for CVICU patients following best practices and unit protocols
- Assess and continuously monitor cardiac, hemodynamic and respiratory status, interpreting cardiac rhythms and telemetry
- Safely titrate vasopressors, sedatives, paralytics and other drips per orders and unit guidelines
- Manage and support patients on advanced mechanical circulatory support including ECMO, Impella and IABP
- Troubleshoot ventilators and collaborate with respiratory therapists on complex ventilatory needs
- Perform bedside critical care procedures and manage CRRT when indicated
- Document thoroughly and accurately in EPIC to ensure continuity of care
- Collaborate with physicians, intensivists and the multidisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes
- Float to other inpatient units as needed (excluding Maternity/NICU) while maintaining unit standards
Qualifications
- Active RN license eligible for practice in the state of Nebraska
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; NIHSS required per unit
- Minimum 2 years RN experience (unit requires at least 1 year caring for CVICU/complex cardiac surgical patients)
- Experience with ECMO, Impella, IABP, CRRT, and post-op cardiac/vascular care strongly preferred
- Competence interpreting cardiac rhythms and titrating drips independently
- Comfortable with EPIC charting and bedside ventilator troubleshooting
- Driver's license required at time of submittal (used to confirm radius rule eligibility)
- Successful completion of an open-book orientation exam (90% pass required) and unit-specific orientation shifts
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN, Diploma, or BSN)
- BSN preferred but not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Critical care nursing principles and cardiac ICU workflows
- Advanced cardiac life support and rhythm interpretation
- Mechanical circulatory support systems (ECMO, Impella, IABP)
- Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) knowledge
- Medication/drip titration and vasoactive management
- Ventilator basics and bedside troubleshooting
- Familiarity with EPIC electronic health record
- Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and multidisciplinary communication skills
