Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform concurrent review, continued stay review, pre-certification, prior authorization, and retrospective utilization reviews using InterQual criteria
• Determine medical necessity per evidence-based guidelines and document decisions clearly
• Use Epic daily for charting and documentation to ensure accurate records
• Apply CMS, Medicare, DRG, CPT coding, and HIPAA regulations to utilization decisions
• Coordinate care and communicate with interdisciplinary teams, HMOs, and IPAs to support safe, timely patient transitions
• Manage case loads consistent with established patient ratios and organizational expectations
• Assist with care planning, disease management, and discharge planning to improve patient outcomes
• Adhere to California labor laws, facility policies, and strict documentation standards

Qualifications

• Active California license required
• Minimum 3 years acute care Case Management or Utilization Management experience in a hospital setting (not in a health plan or medical group)
• InterQual experience required (hardstop)
• Proficient with Epic with recent use in the last 6-12 months
• Strong knowledge of Medicare regulations and UM processes such as CC44s, ABNs, HINNs, MCSNs
• Experience with CPT coding and billing, DRG, CMS, and HIPAA compliance
• Experience with HMOs/IPAs and Medi-Cal knowledge preferred
• Comfort working Pacific Standard Time and rotating between up to three facilities
• Willingness to work an every-third-weekend rotation

Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise with InterQual criteria and utilization review standards
• Proficiency in Epic electronic health record system
• Knowledge of CPT coding, DRG, CMS, and HIPAA guidelines
• Strong clinical judgment to determine medical necessity
• Excellent documentation and charting skills
• Care coordination and discharge planning
• Experience with acute hospital and ambulatory care settings
• Ability to manage workload with a patient ratio experience of approximately 1:40
