Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform transthoracic, transesophageal, M-mode and color-flow Doppler echocardiogram studies accurately and efficiently
- Conduct exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography to provide diagnostic data for cardiology teams
- Perform EKGs, Holter prep/monitoring/analysis and cardiac stress testing as assigned
- Operate and maintain diagnostic cardiac equipment and ensure proper disinfection and aseptic technique
- Utilize hospital information systems for scheduling, processing and correct charging of studies
- Provide age-specific care for neonatal, pediatric and adult patients with compassion and clinical skill
- Serve as a resource for physicians, nursing staff and students; provide preceptorship and clinical instruction
- Document procedures and findings clearly to support clinical decision-making and continuity of care
Qualifications
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- High School Diploma or GED required; completion of an echocardiography certification program preferred
- Successful completion of a cardiac sonography certification program OR a minimum of 2 years hands-on echocardiography experience
- Experience in hospital-based echocardiography preferred, with additional experience in pediatric and neonatal echo highly desirable
- Comfortable using hospital information systems for scheduling and charging
- Strong infection control knowledge and equipment disinfection practice
Education
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Certificate Program in Cardiovascular Sonography (preferred)
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer credential (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography techniques (2-D, M-Mode, color Doppler)
- Exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography
- EKG/ECG acquisition and Holter monitoring/analysis
- Cardiac stress testing procedures and systems
- Operation and troubleshooting of echocardiographs, stress systems and Holter devices
- Hospital Information Systems — scheduling, processing and correct charging of studies
- Infection control, aseptic technique and equipment disinfection
- Ability to provide age-specific care from neonatal through adult patients
- Clinical teaching and preceptorship skills
