Care Manager - Utilization Review

Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Five 8-hour day shifts per week (08:00 AM - 04:30 PM), Day shift; rotating weekend coverage (every 3rd weekend). 100% remote role — must work Pacific Standard Time.

Candidate Pay Rate: $50 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform utilization review activities including concurrent review, continued stay reviews, and retrospective reviews to ensure appropriate care and resource use
- Determine medical necessity using evidence-based guidelines and InterQual criteria (InterQual is a hard stop — you’ll use it every day)
- Complete pre-certification and prior authorization reviews to facilitate timely patient care
- Document thoroughly and accurately in Epic — charting system use is required and recent Epic experience (within 6–12 months) is expected
- Coordinate care with interdisciplinary teams across inpatient, outpatient and observation settings to support smooth transitions
- Apply CPT coding and DRG knowledge when reviewing cases and ensure compliance with CMS, HIPAA and Department of Health regulations
- Support multiple facilities on a rotating schedule and be flexible to work across service lines while adhering to CA labor guidelines
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years acute care Case Management/Utilization Management experience in a hospital setting (not health plan/medical group)
- Proficient with Epic — recent use within the last 6–12 months required
- InterQual experience is mandatory (hard stop)
- Experience with CPT coding and billing, DRG processes, and determining medical necessity per evidence-based guidelines
- Familiarity with Medicare regulations and UM processes (e.g., CC44s, ABNs, HINNs, MCSNs) and experience with HMOs/IPAs
- Ability to manage a patient ratio typical to this role (1:40) and maintain high-quality documentation
- Must be able to work Pacific Standard Time and participate in every-third-weekend rotation
- Charting system experience required; travel experience not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Utilization Review and Case Management fundamentals
- InterQual criteria application and utilization management decision-making
- Epic electronic health record proficiency (recent use required)
- Concurrent Review, Continued Stay Reviews, Pre-Cert Review, Prior Authorization and Retrospective Review processes
- CPT coding and billing, DRG knowledge and CMS/regulatory requirements
- Care coordination across inpatient, outpatient and observation settings
- Strong clinical judgment, documentation skills and ability to apply evidence-based guidelines
- Familiarity with CA Medi-Cal, Medicare regulations and working within HMOs/IPAs
