Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide age-specific preventive and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients from infants to geriatrics.
• Perform oral examinations, periodontal therapy, coronal polishing, and apply topical fluoride.
• Measure and chart periodontal pockets and maintain accurate patient records.
• Perform and process dental radiographs (x-rays) and record vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, temperature).
• Manage patient schedule and ensure smooth clinic flow.
• Coordinate and conduct community prevention activities including sealant clinics, Head Start clinics, and health fairs.
• Maintain hygienist supplies and instruments, including proper sterilization and infection control procedures.
• Collaborate with the dental team to ensure high-quality patient care and participate in required competency assessments.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
• Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
• Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienist
• Active Dental Hygiene License in the State of Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
• Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
• High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually
• High school diploma or GED

Education

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
• Bachelor's degree preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Proper infection control techniques and instrument sterilization
• Principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies
• Skillful use of dental instruments and accurate clinical judgment
• Clinical hygiene techniques including periodontal probing and charting
• Experience with coronal polishing, topical fluoride application, and radiography
• Strong oral and written communication skills and patient education ability
• Good manual dexterity and ability to sit over patients for extended periods
• Experience coordinating sealant clinics, health fairs, and community outreach preferred
