Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess post-anesthesia pediatric patients and prioritize care based on clinical status
• Monitor cardiac, respiratory and neurologic status using advanced monitoring tools
• Administer medications, IV therapies and blood products safely and accurately
• Manage airways and ventilated patients in collaboration with anesthesia and critical care teams
• Respond quickly to dysrhythmias, hemodynamic changes and other perioperative emergencies
• Implement pain management plans including PCA management and opioid reversal when needed
• Provide clear, timely charting using the unit’s documentation system
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists and multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient throughput
• Educate families on post-op care and discharge instructions with compassion and clarity
• Follow facility protocols for malignant hyperthermia, conscious sedation and monitored anesthesia care

Qualifications

• Active CA RN license (required)
• AHA BLS (required)
• PALS (required)
• Minimum 2 years PACU experience (required)
• Minimum 5 years pediatric nursing experience (required)
• Charting experience (any electronic system) — documentation is a must
• Preferred: ACLS, ASPAN certification and 2 years experience in PICU/ED/ICU
• Comfort floating to other campuses and working in an ambulatory surgery center setting
• Facility guideline: COVID-19 vaccination plus booster required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Knowledge & Skills

• Phase I PACU workflows and pediatric post-anesthesia care
• Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia recognition/management
• Arterial line and central line care and blood product administration
• IV therapy, phlebotomy and IV vasopressor management
• Care of ventilated patients and airway management
• External ventricular drain (EVD) care and ICP monitoring
• Conscious sedation, MAC and post-epidural management
• Pain assessment, PCA pump management and use of reversal agents
• Familiarity with malignant hyperthermia protocol and perioperative safety practices
• Ability to work across surgery case types including ortho, neuro, ENT, ocular and general surgery
