Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead and facilitate therapeutic recreational groups that promote mental health, socialization, and life skills
• Assess participants’ needs and develop individualized treatment plans and activity goals
• Implement evidence-based recreational therapy interventions and adapt activities for diverse abilities
• Document progress and outcomes clearly and timely to support continuity of care
• Collaborate with mental health clinicians, custody staff, and program partners to deliver coordinated care
• Maintain safety, professional boundaries, and confidentiality in a correctional facility setting
• Participate in onboarding, staff meetings, and ongoing training to strengthen program quality

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field preferred
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent certification preferred
• Experience working in mental health or behavioral health settings is highly desirable
• Comfortable and able to work in a correctional facility; ability to pass required background checks and clearances
• Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain
• Strong communication, documentation, and group facilitation skills

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered

Knowledge & Skills

• Group facilitation and activity planning for therapeutic outcomes
• Understanding of mental health principles and behavior management
• Skilled in assessment, individualized treatment planning, and progress documentation
• Trauma-informed care and culturally responsive practice
• Ability to collaborate across clinical and custody teams
• Time management, flexibility, and professionalism in a structured environment
