Roles & Responsibilities

• Identify and accession tissue specimens with absolute attention to patient identity and demographics
• Process tissue specimens and operate the tissue processor to ensure timely workflow
• Assist pathologists with gross examinations by providing accurately labeled cassettes
• Perform microtomy: cut sections from embedded tissue blocks and prepare slides
• Stain slides, including special histochemical stains, completing them within requested timeframes
• Prepare and perform frozen section procedures promptly when specimens arrive
• Prepare slides and anatomical material for external consultations and shipping as needed
• File and index slides and blocks for secure storage and efficient retrieval
• Maintain meticulous laboratory records and ensure specimens are retained for appropriate durations
• Support daily diagnostic reporting by delivering high-quality slides to pathologists on time

Qualifications

• Certified as a Histotechnologist with ASCP or equivalent certification required
• Experience and comfort with frozen section preparation and special stains
• Strong proficiency in tissue processing, microtomy, sectioning and staining
• Attention to detail for specimen identification and accurate patient demographics entry
• Ability to follow direction from supervisors and collaborate with pathologists and lab staff
• Familiarity with proper slide and block storage, rotation and retention policies

Knowledge & Skills

• Histology techniques including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy and staining
• Frozen section preparation and rapid specimen handling
• Specimen identification, accessioning and chain of custody practices
• Operation and maintenance of tissue processors and microtomes
• Performing special histochemical stains and troubleshooting staining issues
• Laboratory record keeping, indexing and file management
• Strong organizational skills and time management to meet diagnostic deadlines
• Ability to assist in gross examination and prepare consult/shipments for other labs
