Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process for psychiatric patients ages 5 and up
• Assess, triage, and monitor patients presenting to Emergency Psychiatric Services
• Develop, update, and implement individualized interdisciplinary plans of care
• Evaluate patient outcomes and adjust care plans or escalate concerns when needed
• Perform crisis intervention and de-escalation to ensure patient and staff safety
• Collaborate closely with physicians, social workers, and other team members to coordinate care
• Document patient status, interventions, and outcomes clearly and timely
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment plans, and available resources

Qualifications

• Active State of Maine RN license (required)
• Associate degree in Nursing (2-year) required
• BLS Certification required and current prior to start
• CPI training current prior to start (required)
• At least 1 year of prior experience in mental health/psychiatric nursing
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to manage stress and make sound decisions under pressure
• Willingness to provide flexible coverage to support a 24/7 emergency service
• Note: Previous St. Mary's employees are not accepted for this role

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (2-year) required

Knowledge & Skills

• Nursing process and patient assessment in psychiatric settings
• Care planning and evaluation of patient outcomes
• Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
• Experience in emergency psychiatric services and detoxification care
• Strong teamwork, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Ability to remain flexible and decisive under pressure
• Comfort caring for a wide age range (ages 5+) with varied psychiatric diagnoses
