Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon as the scrub technician: scrub, don gown and gloves, and actively support procedures
• Set up and maintain a sterile field with draping, instruments and supplies tailored to each operation
• Gather and manage specialty instruments and equipment required for a variety of surgical procedures
• Safely transfer and position patients from stretcher to OR table and ensure proper patient positioning
• Perform and maintain accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts with the circulating nurse and report discrepancies
• Handle specimens appropriately—identify, prepare and hand off to circulating team members
• Decontaminate, clean, pack and sterilize instruments and maintain autoclave and supply areas
• Adhere strictly to aseptic technique, infection control policies and safety procedures at all times
• Maintain a clean, well-stocked and safe environment for patients and staff; communicate courteously with patients and families
• Participate in in-service education and support continuous improvement of OR processes

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program OR equivalent hands-on experience (preferred)
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred where applicable; facility-specific credentialing may apply
• Proven ability with sterile technique, instrument handling, counts, and specimen management
• Comfort working evenings, weekends and holidays as required by OR schedules
• Strong communication skills, teamwork mindset, and commitment to patient confidentiality
• Ability to follow safety and infection control policies and report unsafe equipment or conditions

Education

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred
• High school diploma or GED (minimum)

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and aseptic practices
• Setting up and maintaining a sterile field
• Surgical instrumentation and passing instruments efficiently
• Instrument sterilization, autoclave operation and decontamination
• Sponge, needle and instrument counts
• Patient transfer, positioning and age-specific care considerations
• Specimen handling and basic slide preparation
• Infection control and maintaining OR safety
