Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor postoperative patients, using clinical judgment to prioritize care
- Manage airway, pain, and hemodynamic stability during the immediate recovery period
- Implement individualized care plans and communicate changes to the surgical team
- Perform accurate and timely documentation in the patient record
- Educate patients and families on recovery expectations and discharge criteria
- Collaborate with anesthesia, surgical staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth handoffs
- Respond quickly to emergencies and activate appropriate protocols when needed
- Maintain a safe, efficient PACU environment and advocate for patient comfort and dignity
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license — Tennessee license or compact RN preferred
- Minimum 2 years of clinical RN experience (PACU or perioperative experience highly desirable)
- Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or willing to obtain
- Strong assessment skills with experience in post-anesthesia care and monitoring
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced settings
- Ability to pass required onboarding and credentialing for a travel assignment
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Completion of accredited nursing program and basic clinical orientation in perioperative/PACU care
Knowledge & Skills
- Post-anesthesia recovery protocols and discharge criteria
- Monitoring and interpretation of vital signs, hemodynamics, and pain scores
- Airway management fundamentals and emergency response
- IV therapy, medication administration, and titration per protocols
- Patient and family education tailored to postoperative needs
- Electronic health record documentation and handoff communication
- Time management and prioritization in a high-acuity environment
- Teamwork mindset and adaptability to changing case volumes
