Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide independent respiratory assessment and treatment for patients across the lifespan, from neonatal to adult
• Initiate and manage mechanical ventilation, including emergency intubation and ventilator adjustments to support ABG targets
• Perform arterial punctures and interpret arterial blood gases to guide therapy
• Deliver pulmonary function testing, pulse oximetry monitoring, and other diagnostic respiratory tests
• Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and advanced airway management as part of the resuscitation team
• Teach patients and families breathing techniques, aerosol therapy, and oxygen conservation strategies
• Perform chest physiotherapy, suctioning, tracheostomy care, and routine equipment maintenance and sterilization
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to recommend and adjust respiratory treatment plans

Qualifications

• Active Hawaii Respiratory Therapist license required
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) recognized by the National Board of Respiratory Care preferred
• Current BLS/CPR certification required
• Proven experience with mechanical ventilation, ventilator modes, and ventilator weaning
• Demonstrated skill with ABG sampling and interpretation, pulmonary function testing, and pulse oximetry
• Comfort working across age groups including neonatal, pediatric, and adult critical care
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Education

• Completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program
• RRT or CRTT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Ventilator management and advanced life support systems
• Arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and arterial puncture technique
• Pulmonary function testing administration and interpretation
• Tracheostomy care, endotracheal tube management, and airway maintenance
• Patient assessment, clinical decision-making, and age-specific care principles
• Infection control practices and safe equipment handling
• Clear communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
